How to Find a Doctor by Medicare Provider Number

Medicare.gov allows you to find a doctor or other provider by name, specialty, or location, among other things. However, if you know your doctor’s Medicare provider number (National Provider Identifier or NPI), and you can’t remember his name, you can still contact him with billing or other issues. Another government site allows you to find the name and contact information of the doctor with the provider number just that of the doctor.

Instructions

1 Open your web browser and go to the web page for the National Plan and the Provider Enumeration System (see References).

2 Click “Find NPI Registry”; then click on “Find an Individual Provider.”

3 Enter the doctor’s Medicare provider number in the “NPI” text box and click “Search.”
